Day 2 of the Year of the Rabbit for Chinese New Year. Traditionally, this is the day for married daughters to visit their maiden parents. It's very male-centric, I know. For business owners, this would be the day to pray to gods with offerings for a good and prosperous year.

Today is Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rabbit (or Hare, as some might prefer.) I wish everyone a prosperous and healthy year to come. And to celebrate this animal, here are some Chinese paper cuts in the form of rabbits that I've collected over the years. More to come in the next few days.

Elissa used an 8.5" x 11" sheet of laser vellum and cut it into a Halloween snowflake. According to one of my friends who lives in Vermont, snow arrived in late October so I'd assume Alissa's snowflake is exactly what one would see on Halloween up there! How precise and ingenious! And spooky!

It is less than 2 weeks away. Have you been decorating or planning your costume? Anything that involve a sheet of paper?

Show me something that you've created for Halloween from any sheet of paper should be no larger than letter-size (8.5”x11”) and you can get a chance for a paper shopping spree. There is no constraint on the form and colors. You can fold, tear, paint, draw or write. Just be creative!

Send pictures of your creations to me and I will spot out the most creative entry and its creator will receive a $50 gift certificate from Paper Mojo to indulge in a paper shopping spree. Sounds good? Do you not love paper!? Don’t you want more?

To enter, take a picture of your creation and e-mail it to halloween [at] cailun.info. You can create and submit as many entries as possible. Deadline is November 1, 2010 midnight (EST) and I will announce the winner on the following week. You have to be over 18 and a resident of the U.S.

I will reserve the right to post your submissions on the blog to show off some of your creative designs, but I will not use your images for any other purpose. (Don't forget to send me a nickname or your website URL if you want me to include them.) The selection will be subjective, I know, but the finalist creation will be something that is fun, innovative, and hopefully with some sort of “shock” factor. Boo!

Meanwhile, I am having a huge craving for candy corn... I need to go get myself a bag.

My dear friend Ong just came back from Thailand and brought me some great paper and paper goods. Yes, he got me a few sheets of the elephant dung paper that I've wrote about before. Though not from the same factory, these sheets of paper were also made from the high-fiber content elephant dung.

Apparently elephant dung paper is commonly known as "umbrella paper" because it is mostly used for making umbrellas. The sheets that he got were made at a paper factory of one of his acquaintances near Chiang Mai, located at the north of Thailand.


On top of that, I also got a couple of bags of ultra-cute miniature paper flowers made from the same paper and a ton of dried leaves. Not sure what I am going to do with them just yet...
